I started with reptiles, (before getting into big cats) mostly small/medium monitors back in late 80s and early 90s, all were wild caught.

Tis is my old indoor cage I used years ago for small tree monitors with heaters in the shape of a tree limb attached to the real wooden branches. Hanging flower pots were used as water dish or as live food insect container

I had more than one of these cages, well, still have them, just empty now. I would love to get into monitors again, I like them a lot.
The cage dimensions were 4 feet tall, 4 feet long and 2 feet deep.
It was made out of 2x4 wood for frame, bathroom board (the white panels) for walls.
Front was sliding glass doors, bottom was also, glass, built in custom cut for this project and siliconed inside the wooden frame, about 10 inches deep to be waterproof, which made cage hard to move without risking breaking the bottom glass.
I considered Plexiglas, but with sharp monitor claws, I opted for glass. The top was wire screen so animals could bask under the heat lamps.
I have similar iguana cage, my old Cuban Rock iguana ‘Fidel’ still lives in it. He is the one in REXANO posters:
http://www.rexano.org/Posters_JustSayNO/JSN_Gallery.htm
This one had also wire sides since this iguana is not as much into water as monitors are.
It is in 2 levels which increases the square footage of the cage, with doors on both levels for easy cleaning, that have hinges, not sliding doors. There is no glass on my iguana cage, the bottom is metal tub used for watering livestock. It is not as aesthetically pleasing as glass, but it is unbreakable and waterproof and scratchproof. I need to update Rexano website caging pages, but we are here busy building new mammal cages and have no time to write about it and do diagrams, one day when we get bored we need to get to it…When you have small animals it is easy to just go to Pet store cage shopping, with big animals, you better to it alone or custom.
